[ROUT]

[rout]: to defeat utterly, to put to flight, the confused retreat of a defeated army, a disorderly or panic stricken mob, (leg.) three or more persons bent on acts of illegal violence, a large evening party, a fashionable evening assembly, to root up or out, to fetch or drive out by force, to find and force into activity, to bellow, to roar, to make a loud noise.

[rout] was founded by Sam Hayden, Paul Newland and Paul Whitty. Each time that [rout] creates a project the group takes on a different shape. This involves radical changes in line-up and style of presentation. Projects include performances at HCMF, BMIC Cutting Edge Concert Series and tour, Cut & Splice at the ICA , Modern Art Oxford, Kettle's Yard Art Gallery , Beconsfield and Brighton Festival. [rout] have collaborated with visual artist Anna Best, Painter Pete Smith, artists collective O(rphan)d(rift>), curators David Crawforth and Naomi Siderfin, choreographer Marina Collard with dance company prang, video artists Hex and graphic designer Ratio. [rout] been featured on BBC Radio 3's Hear and Now and ResonanceFM.

'[rout] avoids definition, it is in a constant state of flux, it is protean, adapts to circumstance and changes its shape as those involved at its core develop their ideas and approaches to music and performance. Performances may take place within or outside of traditional venues. [rout] gives concert performances, creates installation work, and has made recordings both in conventional recording studios and from the inside of Paul Whitty's fridge. [rout] produce and associate themselves with work that often tends to the periphery, be it maximal, minimal, subliminal, deafening, barely audible. [rout] often work in conjunction or in collaboration with practitioners from other disciplines, performing and creating new work in concert halls, clubs, galleries, churches, bedrooms, railway arches, gardens, caravans, and open fields.'
